Popular progressions of the major diatonic chords
We will look into the popular chord progressions that consist of the major diatonic chords that we have learned from the previous course. All chord progressions in this course are based on the C key but you need to practice the same progressions with all 12 keys.
I - V - vim - IV ( 1 - 5 - 6 - 4 )
The above is the popular seventh chord progression and it is widely used in many of the pop songs worldwide. If you search on the YouTube with the key word 4Chord Song, you can see a medley of songs that are based on this chord progression. I also dealt with many songs that use this progression on my blog.
IM7 - vim7 - iim7 - V7 ( 1 - 6 - 2 - 5 )
The above is the representative progression of the Two - Five motion and the motion is later added by vim7 which is a substitute chord for IM7.
iiim7 - vim7 - iim7 - V7 ( 3 - 6 - 2 - 5 )
This chord progression is based on the above 1-6-2-5 progression with additional iiim7 which is a substitute chord for the tonic chord. The loop of the above chord progression is changed by iiim7 in the last loop.
1-6-2-5-3-6-2-5 Set
I - IV - V - iiim - I - IV - V ( 1 - 4 - 5 - 3 - 1 - 4 - 5 )
This chord progression gives a bright feeling. It is a simple but frequently used pattern.
Reharmonization
Reharmonization is the technique of keeping an existing melody and changing the chord progression. Its basic approach is reharmonization using substitute chords. Reharmonize easy and familiar chord progressions and then see what it feels like.
