Hammer-on/Hammering-on
A hammer-on is a playing technique just like beating with a hammer.
Hammer-on and hammering-on are the same words and described as H on a score (in some scores, they are just described as slurs without specific indication).
This technique is used on grace note or slurs and can also be used when elevating the notes.
Hammer-on is described on a score as follows:
As you need to play the picking for the first note and then sound the next notes only with your left hand, you need to tab the fingerboard fast and strong.
Keep your practice so that you can play the hammer-on on open strings and frets comfortably.
Grace notes and slurs
As a grace note does not have its specific duration and therefore play it fast between notes.
So the grace note is not calculated in beat.
A slur has its duration and therefore you need to keep it while playing.
The following score shows the same melodies including the one with grace notes and another with slurs.
Let's watch the video to see the duration.
The following shows an application in an arpeggio.
Please be noted that the D chord has a grace note whereas the Am7 chord has a slur of eighth notes.
while playing the D chord, play the picking for the zero fret and then create the sound by tapping with the left hand on the second fret.
Same as above, while playing the Am7 chord, play the picking for the zero fret and then create the sound by tapping with the left hand on the first fret.
The following shows an application in stroke.
