Course 23 Cutting technique

Cutting technique

A cutting technique is one of the muting techniques.
The cutting technique is keeping the string mute with the right hand while stroking.
There are two types of the muting technique including the one with the thumb and another one with the side of the hand just like the palm mute.

When you keep the string mute with your thumb, use the following part in red color:

You can use the side of the thumb to keep it mute.

When you keep the string mute with the side of your hand, use the following part in red color:

You can mute it with the part indicated above.

The above video shows the cutting techniques and the first one is done by the side of the hand and the second one is done by the thumb.
I recommend you to use the second one as it is a little bit easier for you to control.
When you mute a string with the cutting technique, it would be better for you to mute the mid or high pitch strings rather than the low pitch ones.

The cutting is described as X on a score.

Today's chord progression

It is a useful technique for up tempo songs.
While practicing, you need to focus on clear cutting rather than the playing tempo.
